So what does April snow bring?

Raindrops, sleet and snow keep fallin’ on our heads.

Iowa State students, faculty and staff may not think Wednesday’s snow seemed much like April weather, but Brad Edwards, chief meteorologist for WOI-TV, said there is a reason behind the snow and rain.

“The reason why we are getting the rain and snow is because of a very strong low pressure area. The jet stream is very energized right now. At one end of the storm there are tornadoes and at the other end is the cold and snow,” he said.

Locals should be thankful that Ames was only hit with snow. Several surrounding states were threatened with tornadoes on Wednesday.

“There is no threat of tornadoes in Iowa but in western Illinois, Indiana and Missouri they all have a chance of being hit by them,” he said.

Those in the Des Moines area saw about 1 1/2 inches of snow and rain Wednesday.

“Some areas in central Iowa had as much as 3 inches, but that is mainly in northern and western Iowa around the Fort Dodge area,” Edwards said.

Students were forced to brave wet and cold weather throughout most of the day Wednesday. Umbrellas were common. Umbrellas blown inside out were more common.

“I don’t mind that it is raining in April, but it totally sucks that we are getting snow. Yesterday I got to play frisbee and today I am stuck inside studying,” said Chris Wisher, a sophomore in finance.

Edwards said the average rainfall for Iowa in April is about 3 inches. Before the rain and snow was dumped on central Iowa Wednesday, the area was behind in monthly totals.

The most recent storm likely will put the state ahead of the rain schedule for the month. Still, Edwards said the flooding problems in other areas of the country won’t be finding there way to central Iowa anytime soon.

“We do not have anything to worry about when it comes to flooding. Since there is no snow left the rivers will probably only go up a little,” he said.

Today is expected to be cool and dry, but mostly sunny in the morning, with highs in the 50s. Heavier clouds will move in later today. Rain is expected to return Friday.
