Inconsiderate parking

Cynthia Potter

We’re all busy here so I’ll make this brief. The issue is parking — specifically the Memorial Union parking ramp.

We all know parking is at a premium — not enough spaces and not enough access. Many of us have made peace with the fact that if we’re going to have access to our vehicles without having to pack a lunch and take a hike, we’re going to have to pay the price and park in the ramp. Having conceded that, it’s particularly irritating to not be able to park because of people taking up two spaces. The yellow lines are not suggestions as to where one might park lacking a better idea. The lines delineate sufficient room for any vehicle a student is likely to be driving, short of a dump truck.

Whether it’s the bad aim of the too-hurried or the over-partied, or the parental pride lavished on a sports car, taking two spaces is inconsiderate and unfair. As you park, please imagine yourself looking for a space with 20 minutes to get to class and do unto others …
