ISU baseball team drops three to Texas A&M

The Iowa State baseball team traveled to College Station, Texas over the weekend for a three-game series against the Aggies of Texas A&M.
The Cyclones dropped all three games to the Aggies, who are ranked 21st in the nation by the Sporting News. The losses dropped the Cyclones’ record to 11-19 overall and 3-12 in conference play.
Texas A&M jumped all over the Cyclones in game one as they pounded out a season high 22 hits, 19 runs and five home runs in the contest.
Texas A&M held the Cyclones scoreless until the fifth inning when ISU scored three runs.
The game was called after the seventh inning due to the 10-run rule, with the Aggies winning 19-4.
Cyclone ace Ryan Seifert started the game on the mound for ISU and lasted only three innings, giving up 11 hits and seven earned runs while striking out two. Seifert took the loss, dropping his record to 3-4 on the season.
Senior right fielder Clark Jones led the Cyclones at the plate in game one going 3-for-4, with two runs batted in. Senior center fielder Mike Bahun went 2-for-4 scoring two of the Cyclones’ four runs in the game.
The Cyclones were able to pound out 10 hits against the Aggies pitching staff, but left 11 runners on base.
Iowa State went through four pitchers, with junior Jason Mathys, senior Dan Prehn and junior Scott Sedlacek combining to pitch three innings in relief of Seifert.
In the nightcap, the Cyclones rebounded as the pitching staff held the Aggies to only five runs on eight hits, but the Aggies were able to prevail 5-4.
Junior pitcher Nathan Teut took the mound in game two and pitched seven solid innings, striking out four and allowing three earned runs, but took the loss dropping his record to 1-3 on the season.
The Cyclones were held to only five hits, but were able to plate four runs with three coming in the first inning to jump out to an early lead.
The Aggies came back and took the lead in the sixth to end the scoring.
Junior Shawn Leimbek paced the Cyclone offense going 1-for-4 with a double,one RBI and one run scored.
Senior designated hitter Chris Grubb also went 1-for-4 and scored a run for the Cyclones. Bahun recorded his 16th stolen base, leading ISU.
Rounding out the series with a single game on Sunday, Texas A&M was able to sweep the Cyclones with an 8-7 win. Sophomore Brad Waldron started the game on the mound for ISU, pitching 3.2 innings. The Cyclones again went through four pitchers in the game as the Aggies were able to record 14 hits to Iowa State’s 10.
ISU again took an early lead scoring one run in the top of the first, but A&M came back to score in the bottom of the second. The Cyclones again took the lead, scoring four runs in a big sixth inning, but the Aggies again came back to score three more runs for the one- point victory.
Senior catcher Guye Senjem led the Cyclones’ attack at the plate going 2-for-3 with one run scored and a walk.
Junior third baseman Bill Uelmen also went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. Bahun had a solid game at the plate as well with a 2-for-5 effort, one run scored and one RBI.
Bahun, Leimbek, Uelmen and Senjem all recorded doubles at the plate for ISU.
Junior pitcher Steve Larkin took the loss for the Cyclones, coming in to pitch 2.1 innings of relief.
The Cyclones’ next contest is April 8 against Minnesota at Cap Timm field.
