A nod for Michael Gartner
April 7, 1997
To every journalist, writer, editor, photographer and composer, the prospect of winning a Pulitzer Prize has been, at most, a dream.
So when Michael Gartner, editor of The Ames Daily Tribune was notified that he won such an award for editorial writing Monday, one can assume he was pretty happy about it.
It’s not too often a Pulitzer Prize comes the way of a journalist through the daily grind of deadlines and reporting, but Gartner is not your typical newspaper man.
His resume and experience extends pretty far back. He was editor of The Des Moines Register for several years, president of NBCNews and a member of the Pulitzer committee itself.
With the addition of this most recent achievement, Gartner’s portfolio isn’t too shabby.
In fact, there’s probably none like it on the planet.
And it’s also nice that a little town like Ames has someone here of Gartner’s status. It shows shows the big cities that a small town in Iowa can harbor great talents, too.
What should Michael Gartner do now that he’s won a Pulitzer Prize?
The Daily Editorial Board has a suggestion for him: Go to Disneyland.
We hear lots of famous people go there.
