The Iowa State men’s golf team traveled to Springfield, Mo., March 31-April 1 to participate in the Southwest Missouri State University Invitational — and walked away with the team title.

The Cyclones, one of 17 teams participating in the tournament, found consistent play throughout the tournament from all five players and claimed their second title of the 1996-97 school year.

Senior golfer Donnie Teeter said he feels the victory will help the confidence level of the team throughout the rest of the spring schedule.

“It is a good building block,” he said. “It keeps the momentum building even though the field wasn’t as strong.”

Leading the charge for Iowa State was sophomore linkster Corey Chambers. Chambers claimed third place in the individual standings with a 220-stroke total.

Chambers’ score was just four strokes over par for the tournament.

Finishing two strokes behind Chambers was junior golfer Jason Knutzon. The junior continued his stellar season with yet another top-five finish while accumulating 222 strokes.

In fact, Knutzon hasn’t finished below fifth place in any tournament this year.

Also finding his way into the top-10 was Teeter. Teeter took 226 strokes to complete the tournament, finishing in a tie for 10th place.

Teeter said he was pleased with the team’s performance.

“We played well,” he said. “We played close to our capabilities, but not quite.”

While three golfers finished in the top-10, the last two claimed spots in the top 15 spots.

Junior Jon Levy found himself in a tie for 12th place at the completion of the tournament after sitting out the team’s previous tournament this spring.

Levy completed the 54-hole tournament with a 228-stroke total.

Rounding out the Cyclone contingency was senior golfer Travis Korver.

Korver finished one stroke behind Levy and finished in a tie for 15th place.

With a strong performance from all five golfers, the Cyclones won the team title with a total of 890 strokes.

The total was good enough for a 17-stroke advantage over second-place finisher and fellow Big 12 competitor Missouri.

Other teams of note participating in the tournament include fellow Big 12 rival Kansas State.

The Wildcats finished in 12th position, while shooting a team score of 945 strokes.

Cross-state rival Northern Iowa found itself in 11th place overall. With its 943-stroke total, it topped the Wildcats by a pair of shots.

Claiming the individual medalist honors was Robert Russell. Russell, from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, finished with 215 strokes, five strokes better than Chambers.

UMKC claimed a third-place tie with Cameron University at 911 strokes.

Next action for the Cyclones will be April 7-8 when the team travels to Jonesboro, Ark., to participate in the Arkansas State Invitational.
