I don’t care
April 15, 1997
Over the past few months, a great deal has been written about the views, preferences, and opinions of Iowa State’s “silent majority.” It seems that every senator, spokesperson and student protest leader has defended his/her ideas by claiming that the majority of ISU students are quietly on their side. Well, since I’m not out protesting this or debating that, I feel I fit into that “silent majority,” and so does nearly everyone else I know here at ISU.
Therefore, I feel fairly qualified to speak on behalf of this majority, and our official position is: WE DON’T CARE. We don’t care who the GSB President is. We don’t care about Catt Hall. We don’t care about whether the Senate should have special seats to represent certain groups. We don’t care about reviewing President Jischke. We don’t care about the semantics of ‘education’ versus ‘training’. We don’t care if the GSB Financial Director gets reseated, and we certainly don’t care who made Adam Gold cry this week. Basically, we don’t care.
What we do care about is getting a quality education from a quality university for an affordable price and getting a job when we graduate. We think President Jischke’s doing a decent job and so are most of the faculty. Beyond that, you can debate, protest and argue all you want. We don’t care. By tomorrow, every special interest group on campus will have no doubt e-mailed me to tell me how apathetic and out of touch I am. But you know what? I don’t care.
