Denying equal access
April 17, 1997
Let’s see how simple we can make this:
* I pay my phone bill, which allows me unlimited local calling
* I pay my tuition and computer use fees, which entitle me to all privileges that any student receives. The fact that I live off campus should not be held against me.
Several of my professors have made a practice of posting assignments, notes, schedules and study guides on the Internet. More than once I have been required to provide an e-mail address to a professor.
When I pay the same fees that an on- campus student pays, why should I be denied equal access to part of the educational system?
This is not an issue between on- or off-campus living arrangements. This is an issue between the university and its phone carrier.
If AT&T wants more money, it should come out of everyone’s pocket. Any changes should be universal and not based on your living arrangements.
