Gimme a ‘D’
April 16, 1997
So, the College of Design wants a letter “D” included in the word “Veishea.”
Where would they put it? We can try it a variety of ways:
“Vedishea.” This, however, puts the word, “dish,” in “Veishea.”
The new Veishea slogan could be, “Vedishea: It’s a ‘dishy’ celebration.”
“Veidshea,” “Veishdea” and “Veisheda” are also possibilities.
Our personal favorite is just fun to say, “Veis-head.”
Even “D’Veishea” could work.
But aside from placement in the word, there could be misconceptions as to what this new letter would denote.
“Design?” Yes, the college would like to be recognized just like any other college in the university.
But the “D” could also stand for the obvious: “drinking.” And at the opposite end of the spectrum: “Designated driver.”
The editorial board doesn’t want another possibility overlooked. The “D” could stand for “Daily,” as in — you guessed it — Iowa State “Daily.”
Everyone likes Dedric Willoughby, the “D” could be for him.
Two words: Tim Floy-“d.”
How about Troy “D”avis?
Deadhead’s (as in The Grateful) may be more attracted to attend the spring celebration.
“D” also stands for the mid-term grade Daily editor in chief Chris Miller received in Communication Studies 101.
Whatever the “D” may mean eventually, this is a topic that should be taken very seriously.
While the design college may deserve some recognition, drinking and d-grades may influence the spirit of the idea in the long run.
Besides, darn it, the “D” should count for something.
