Pratt trial to start today; jury selection postponed
April 9, 1997
The trial for Iowa State forward Kenny Pratt will start this morning with a review of court documents and written testimony.
Jury selection has been postponed.
Pratt’s trial was postponed on Tuesday due to scheduling conflicts at the Story County Courthouse.
While Pratt most likely will not be present, lawyers for the county and Pratt will go over court documents regarding the case at the Story County Courthouse in Nevada at 9 a.m.
Pratt faces charges of drunken driving, serious assault of a police officer, resisting arrest and interference with official acts in connection with a Dec. 28 confrontation with Ames police.
Police reports said a car owned by a woman from Perry collided with Pratt’s vehicle at the corner of Lincoln Way and Dakota Avenue about 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 28.
Police officials said Pratt failed a Breathalyzer test at the scene. Pratt was driving a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am rented in Des Moines by Audis Gardner, of Des Moines. Gardner was listed on the National Car Rental Agency as the only authorized driver.
The report also indicated that Pratt, a senior from Chicago, allegedly kicked an Ames police officer in the head, knocking one of the officer’s teeth loose.
ISU Coach Tim Floyd suspended Pratt from the team following the incident, but Pratt was reinstated by an athletic department appeals committee.
Pratt helped lead the Cyclones to a 22-9 season record and the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. ISU defeated Illinois State and Cincinnati before losing to UCLA.
