Iowa State’s Veishea Advisory Committee will meet today to evaluate the 1997 Veishea celebration.

University President Martin Jischke called for an accelerated review of the annual festivities in light of the April 20 murder of Uri Sellers. Jischke said he will review any recommendation by the committee, including a recommendation to cancel the 75-year-old event.

The meeting will take place in the Oak Room of the Memorial Union from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Dan Robinson, interim vice president for student affairs and chairman of the committee, said the committee will first discuss the positives and negatives of this year’s celebration. Committee members will also discuss “how to make it a better celebration” if Veishea continues.

“We will also discuss whether we will continue Veishea or not,” Robinson said.

Robinson said if Veishea continues, committee members will “take a closer look” at issues and activities dealing with alcohol, alcohol abuse, external traffic, outside visitors and parties and their relationships to Veishea.

Robinson said the advisory committee has met with Veishea officials all year.

The committee is made up of representatives from the Department of Public Safety, the Ames Police Department, Ames businesses and Iowa State alumni.
