Iowa State dance students present spring concert
April 24, 1997
For dance enthusiasts, the ISU Dance spring concert will be the place to be on Saturday evening. Two special projects will be featured in the recital, the first presented by Orchesis II.
“It is a collage of movement pieces that looks at the use of the newspaper within our daily lives,” Janice Baker of ISU Dance said.
Another feature dance will be a work choreographed by Josie Metal-Corbin, the 1997 Fisher-Artist-In-Residence. “A Day of Forgiveness” is a piece using European folk dances, especially those from Bosnia, Baker said.
The Fisher-Artist-In-Residence program is funded by the Alumni Association and provides the department with a guest artist. While visiting for four days during the beginning of April, Metal-Corbin taught classes and choreography, Baker said.
She said some of the other choreography that Metal-Corbin taught will be shown during the recital as well.
The entire recital will showcase many types and styles of dance, including modern dance to rap music, tap, modern improvisational, jazz, traditional renaissance, ballet, and ballroom dancing. Each type of dance that is taught in ISU classes will be performed, Baker said.
Along with around 45 ISU students, children from the Dance Place, a Des Moines dance school, will perform. These students, ages 10 to 14, will be performing at 3 p.m. at the Campanile and at 4 p.m. at North Grand Mall, before the evening recital.
The concert, which will last approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes, starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Toman Dance Studio Theater, Room 196 in the Physical Education Building. Tickets are $3 at the door.
