A great performance

Sure, the Iowa State men’s basketball team made it to the Sweet 16. And running back Troy Davis broke numerous school records and was a two-time Heisman trophy candidate. But all too often, the efforts and successes of other ISU athletes go unnoticed.
Such is the case with the ISU track teams. Last weekend, the running, jumping and throwing Cyclones racked up 20 victories at the Iowa Invitational Meet.
The women’s team won nine events, including the shotput, discus, high jump, 100 meter hurdles, 400-meter dash, 800-meter run, 3,000 meters and the 400-meter hurdles.
In fact, a personal best of 57.04 was clocked for senior Sara Riermersma in the 400-meter run. Laurie Hammill also reached her personal best time of 14.48 in the 100-meter hurdles.
These athletes are pretty good to begin with, otherwise they wouldn’t be competing for a Division I school. Reaching their personal best places them and Iowa State above the rest.
And the men’s team fared pretty well, too. They took home 11 titles of the 18 total events they competed in.
Randy Thompson, Yago Lamela-Tobio and Jason Woods each won two titles, prompting their coach, Steve Lynn, to call their efforts “a nice job.” In all, the Cyclone men won the 110-meter hurdles, 400-meter hurdles, 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump, discus, shot put, high jump, 800 meters, 1,500-meter run and triple jump.
ISU’s Cyclones deserve a little more recognition. After all, they face some tough practices so they can run in circles faster. Besides, they have to be more precise: their race lane’s “out of bounds” is a heck of a lot smaller than that of a football field or basketball court.
