Iowa State students will have the chance to experience another culture this weekend at Malaysian Culture Night ’97.

“Fascinating Malaysia” will be held at 6 p.m. on Sunday in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union.

“This is a chance to share our diverse culture through traditional dances, music, food and cultural exhibitions,” said Wai-Keong Lin, a senior in civil engineering who is the public relations director for Malaysian Culture Night ’97.

Malaysia is made up of three ethnic groups: the Malays, the Chinese and the Indians. All three groups will be represented at Malaysian Culture Night.

All of the proceeds will be donated to the Youth and Shelter Services of Ames.

“This year we would like to direct our attention to the youth by supporting the Youth and Shelter Services in their goals of providing prevention, education, treatment and residential services to children, youth and families,” Lin said.

In previous years, proceeds have been donated to children of Iowa farmers, victims of the 1993 floods and the Heartland Senior Services of Ames.

Malaysian Culture Night is not an annual event, but it has been going on for some time. Lin said major Malaysian Culture Nights of the past were held in 1987, 1993 and 1995.

A crowd of about 500 is expected at Malaysian Culture Night. Tickets are $7 for students and $12 for non-students. Tickets are available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the Hub and will also be available at the door on Sunday.

In addition, Larry Curtis, the mayor of Ames, will be the patron for the night.

“We urge the public to come and to have a good time getting a taste of Malaysian culture and helping the Youth and Shelter Services,” Lin said.
