Teen-agers, men they met online found by authorities

Tips led authorities to two teen-age girls who disappeared with men they met in computer chat rooms.

A 13-year-old girl and a 22-year-old man missing for three weeks were picked up by police Thursday following a chance sighting by a customer at a drive-up bank window in Salem, N.H.

In southern Illinois, an AWOL airman and a 14-year-old girl missing for four months were found Wednesday living next door to a sheriff in an apartment complex.

Both cases were featured on ”The Maury Povich Show” during a segment on Internet seduction.

Keir Fiore was in his car waiting to cash a check when he and the 13-year-old girl were spotted at the bank. Fiore, from Manchester, N.H., was arrested on charges of crossing state lines to avoid prosecution. He had agreed to surrender to Manchester police on sexual assault charges March 25 but he and the girl disappeared.

The girl was taken into protective custody and not charged, police said. She appeared unharmed, though the assault charges involved her.

”I was almost ready to give up. We love her and we’re so glad she’s home,” said the girl’s mother.

The FBI tracked the two to southwest Connecticut a few days after they disappeared.

In Illinois, Senior Airman Brooker Maltais, 22, was wanted by the Air Force on charges of desertion, said Maj. Cynthia Colin, a spokeswoman at Offutt Air Force Base near Omaha, Neb., where Maltais was stationed.

The girl from Brighton, N.Y., was found at the apartment they shared in nearby Marion, said Kevin O’Connell, her uncle. They were living next door to Williamson County Sheriff Dennis Presley, who didn’t know they were being sought.

The two disappeared four months ago after meeting in a chat room devoted to a vampire game. Police received hundreds of tips on their whereabouts but none panned out until Wednesday, when a Maury Povich viewer saw them.

The teen-ager was unharmed, police said. She disappeared Dec. 19.

Authorities had not decided whether to charge Maltais, who had been missing from Offutt since Dec. 24. He was detained in Illinois on the Air Force charges.
