A KUREfor Veishea?

Editorial Board

The student-run radio station of Iowa State, KURE, has a DJ service. So does professional radio station Star 102.5 in Des Moines.

And so the folks down at Veishea wanted to hire a someone to DJ a street dance. They chose Star 102.5.

We admit it would be ideal for Veishea to choose KURE for a street dance because both are student organizations, but we don’t blame the folks at Veishea for choosing Star 102.5 if they are looking for professional service because, hey, it’s a free market. We live in a capitalist society.

If people at KURE wanted the gig, they should have brought something to the table that Star 102.5 doesn’t have. OK, KURE is free, and that’s a plus for them, but chances are that Star 102.5 provides a better service than KURE, which is lucky to keep its CDs from mysteriously disappearing from the station offices.

The folks at Veishea simply wanted to provide the better service to the students at the dance. Nothing wrong with that.

Bringing Star 102.5 to Veishea may also mean bringing the student-run celebration to listeners down in Des Moines.

We look forward to fun Welch Avenue street dances, with 1980s music on Friday, April 18, and 1970s music on Saturday, April 19. If anyone has listened to Star 102.5 on those nights of the week, they know 102.5 has a large collection of ’70s and ’80s music.

KURE people are still welcome to set up remote broadcasts throughout the Veishea celebration. As a matter of fact, this is the first year in many that Veishea doesn’t have an official radio station. KURE should take advantage of this and bring aspects Veishea to students from across the celebration, because Star 102.5 will only be covering the street dance.
