The Iowa State track teams had a huge day at the Iowa Invitational track meet on Saturday, combining for a total of 20 victories.

The Cyclone men’s squad came out in impressive form, capturing 11 of 18 events.

“Anytime you run, you want to come out and establish yourself,” said ISU Head Track Coach Steve Lynn.

“It was nice to have good weather, and the guys responded by doing a good job.”

Double winners for the Cyclones were Jason Woods, Randy Thompson and Yago Lamela-Tobio.

Woods took top honors in the 110-meter hurdles (13.75) and the 400-meter hurdles (52.02). Thompson won the 100 meters with a personal best of 10.1 and the 200 meters (21.02).

Lamela-Tobio took the gold in the long jump (23-9 1/2).

“All three of those guys did a nice job,” said Lynn.

“Woods is really running well for us. He beat an NCAA champion last week, and he beat him pretty handily.”

The Cyclone weight men also continued their dominance.

Jamie Beyer won the shot put (60-5 3/4) while teammate Tim Wilson won the discus (180-8).

“The throwers continued to do very well. They had some good performances,” Lynn said.

Also for the Cyclones, sophomore Marcus Clark jumped 6-6 to win the high jump, Freshman Brian Smith won the 800 meters (1:55.77) and Dennis Machooka took the 1500-meter run with a time of 3:56.34.

For the ISU women’s squad, which won nine events, Kris Curnyn captured the shot put and the discus title with tosses of 48-4 3/4 and 164-1.

Leah Elbert won the high jump with a leap of 5-9 1/4.

Cyclone senior Laurie Hammill placed first in the 100-meter hurdles by posting a personal best time of 14.48.

Senior Sara Riemersma also posted a personal best time by winning the 400-meter with a clocking of 57.04.

Kim Iverson took the title in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.19.

Rounding out the first place finishers for the ISU women’s squad were freshman Laurie Meythaler in the 3,000-meters (10:20.85) and Katarina Svensson in the 400-meter hurdles (14.78).

Both teams will be in action at the Drake Relays on Friday and Saturday.

“We always look forward to Drake. It’s always a thrill to win anything there,” Lynn said.

“We’ve won 30 titles at Drake in the last 10 years, and the closest team to us is Baylor with 18. I think we have a chance to add to that this year.”
