An evening of blues at the M-Shop

J.R. Grant

From the land of Longhorns and the SXSW music festival comes Gary Primich, one of the hardest- working blues vocalists and harmonica players of his time.

Feeding off of a tough minded, blue collar attitude, this Austin, Texas native has clawed through the music scene to make his mark on the blues industry.

Riding a growing wave from his latest appearance at the SXSW tour, Primich sets sail on a nonstop national tour in support of his latest CD, Company Man, a fitting name given his work ethic.

Company Man is Primich’s first release on Black Top Records and has received rave reviews for its flowing blues gospel sprinkled with a touch of rock ‘n’ roll.

Primich said when he recorded the album he paid close attention to “old school” blues traditions.

Much of the album was recorded with the band performing in an ensemble, all instruments playing at the same time, rather than each dubbing tracks and then mixing them all together.

Primich said the album lacks “electronic doodas, echo compression et cetera and reverb.”

This is Primich’s fifth album, and although each album is listed under Primich, the artist said he has a solid cast of supporting characters that contribute a lot of energy to his live shows and studio tracks.

Although Primich calls Austin home, he is originally from the Midwest, hailing from Gary, Ind. He grew up traveling around with friends and listening to blues on Chicago stations.

Primich brings a classic blues, jazz and gospel blend to the Maintenance Shop for two shows tomorrow night. The first begins at 8:00 p.m. with the second at 10:30. Tickets are $6, $5 for students.
