Iowa State golf team sets records
April 23, 1997
Outplaying the field maybe an understatement for what was accomplished by the Iowa State men’s golf team April 21-22 in Des Moines.
The tournament, which was played on two courses, Hyperion Country Club and the Des Moines Golf and Country Club, featured 16 teams including cross-state rivals Northern Iowa and Drake University.
Iowa State walked away with the championship trophy and had four golfers finish in the top 10 en route to a 13-stroke team championship lead. The Cyclones led the tournament after the first round and never trailed after rounds of 285-282-292 (859).
Head Coach Dale Anderson was thrilled with the performance of the Cyclones.
“We had five all-time records broken,” Anderson said. “This is probably the best an Iowa State team has played on a legitimate golf course.”
In fact, one record was broken twice within eight minutes.
“Travis Korver set the 36-hole record of six under, and Jason Knutzon broke it eight minutes later at eight under.”
Anderson said that, after 36 holes, the team had set a record of 17 under par.
Knutzon continued his stellar season as he brought home the individual medalist honor, followed closely by runner-up and fellow Cyclone Travis Korver. Knutzon’s finish was his sixth top five of the year and ninth top-10 finish this season in 11 events. Knutzon shot rounds of 71-67-73 (211) to finish a pair of strokes ahead of Korver. Korver posted identical 70s for the first two rounds followed by a 73 (213).
“This is definitely a team effort,” Anderson said. “You don’t get a team record from two people.”
Finishing in fourth place overall, and the third Cyclone in the top 10 was senior Donnie Teeter.
The senior shot 68-76-73 (217), finishing one stroke behind third-place finisher Ben Pettitt of Drake.
The fourth and final Cyclone in the top 10 was junior Jon Levy. Levy finished in a tie for ninth overall after rounds of 76-71-73 (220).
Also playing in the tournament for the Cyclones was freshman Aaron Patton. Patton finished in a tie for 44th overall, 82-74-75 (231) and 20 strokes behind Knutzon.
“Aaron didn’t have a great start, but contributed in the second round,” Anderson said.
Drake University finished in second place in the team title chase with a final tally of 872 strokes.
Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Pettitt’s third-place finish of 216 strokes.
Finishing in a tie for sixth place was Cory Braunshweig. Braunschweig shot 71-72-76 (219) to help the Bulldogs to second overall.
The University of Missouri-Kansas City finished in third place as a team, 14 strokes behind the Bulldogs.
Kangaroo golfer Robert Russell finished in a tie for sixth place overall with rounds of 72-70-77 (219).
Finding themselves in fourth place overall were the Panthers of Northern Iowa. John Panek led the Panther squad with his fifth-place finish after rounds of 74-72-72 (218). Next action for the Cyclones will be the Big 12 Championships beginning this Saturday.
“I think doing this before the Big 12 tournament puts us in a good frame of mind knowing that we can put up low scores,”Anderson said.
