When will my boy Troy get respect

The Last Day of Veishea

(Sung to the tune of the Twelve Days of Christmas)

By the last day of Veishea, the Veishea Spirit had bestowed upon me twelve different parties, eleven police encounters, ten miles of walking, nine minutes of sleep, eight slices of pizza, seven barbecues, 6-3 loss for the Cubs, five girls’ phone numbers, four cherry pies, three hangovers, two live bands, and a third round pick for Troy Davis.

What was that last verse? I think it would have a better ring if I could have said first round. Troy Davis was picked second in the third round of the draft. Number 62, to be precise. That is pretty good news. I can live with that. But wait! This blows my mind. He was picked right after a Hawkeye, `Sedrick Shaw. What?!?!?! Is this some kind of cruel, sadistic joke?

I am tired. And I am tired of being tired. Tired, that is, of Troy Davis not getting any respect outside of Iowa State.

Tired of Davis’s accomplishments taking a back seat to wimps like Sedrick Shaw.

Tired of hearing jokes about Davis’s intelligence.

Davis is the only back in NCAA history to rush more than 2,000 yards two years in a row.

Doesn’t that mean anything? Apparently not enough to get him into the first round.

For sure, getting the Heisman doesn’t do much for a person these days, since Danny Wuerffel was still available Sunday.

I have to say that the New Orleans Saints have class for picking Davis. There is not doubt in my mind that Davis will pan out for them.

But wait. This just in, as I took a break from writing this column to get some lunch, I was informed that Danny Wuerffel was picked by the Saints in the fourth round.

First, Heisman runner-up in the third round, then the Heisman winner in the fourth round?

This proves that the Heisman is a poor indicator of a player’s value, let alone, a worthless piece of scrap metal.

Yes, I am still bitter that Davis went to New York City TWICE to come home empty handed.

I feel I must inform my loyal readers and fan club members that even though Davis is going to the Saints, and now Wuerffel, I am still a loyal Buffalo Bills fan.

In other news, younger brother Darren Davis made a good showing in town Saturday, rushing for 136 yards and four touchdowns.

But more impressive was Todd Bandhauer, who completed 17 of 19 passes, with one interception.

I have renewed interest in our football team — maybe next year they will have a winning record.

Well, I am just about finished with today’s column.

I have to use up all of my column space so I can go back to sleep to be well rested for my Monday 8:00.

Tune in next week, for my last column of the semester.
