Seniors count the days

As seniors hurry across campus and get their affairs in order for graduation, the Senior Class Council wants to be sure they have fond memories of Iowa State.

To help foster those memories, the council is sponsoring Senior Week — with activities Wednesday and Friday. “Senior Week is a time for seniors to enjoy being at Iowa State,” said Brian Grattan, president of the council. “It is just to have a lot of people come and have fun.”

While the council is sponsoring Senior Week, it is funded by several sources. “Funding comes partially from the Alumni Association, senior fees and sponsorship,” Grattan said.

A Real World Seminar was held Tuesday night in the Pioneer Room of the Memorial Union and addressed such topics as networking, business etiquette and financial planning. It also highlighted the transition students must make after college from school to work.

Things lighten up a bit on Wednesday at 9 p.m. with an outdoor concert by the Swing Crew at the courtyard of the Scheman Building. Tickets for the concert are $2, and can be purchased at the door or at the Student Alumni Association office.

Although prizes will be drawn throughout Senior Week, graduating students who bring their “flush” or rejection letters to the concert will be eligible for additional prizes.

Senior Week will close with a variety of events on Friday, including a free barbecue on central campus south of the Campanile at noon and a reception honoring graduating international students at 7 p.m. in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union.

Grattan said “the high point” of Senior Week is a concert by The Nadas at the Campanile at 10 p.m. on Friday. This is a last chance for graduating seniors to go campaniling with their sweethearts. If people are still hungry after the barbecue, gyros will be sold at the concert.

Grattan is optimistic about the turnout for Senior Week. “The events are geared to all students in general,” he said. “I think we should have a lot of people there.”
