Iowa State drops two in Manhattan

The Iowa State baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Kansas State on Saturday by one run in each contest, 7-6 and 10-9.

In the first game, the Cyclone offense was on fire, tallying 12 hits.

Cyclone third baseman Bill Uelmen had a monster day at the plate, leading the ISU offense by cracking four hits, including two doubles that brought home three runners.

Second baseman Jade O’Brien also had a big day at the plate. O’Brien collected two hits while left fielder Aaron Runk also added a couple singles.

Cyclone starting pitcher Nathan Teut took the loss on the mound for ISU, pitching five innings, allowing four earned runs off eight hits and striking out two Wildcat batters.

In the second game of the evening, the Cyclones jumped out to an early lead by scoring six runs in the first inning.

Iowa State scored those six runs on only three hits and with two outs.

Kansas State pitcher Jon Oiseth whaled in the Cyclones’ first run before designated hitter Matt McDonough singled to left to drive in two more runs for ISU.

It was then the hot bat of O’Brien that surged the Cyclone offense.

O’Brien blasted a three-run homer to bring the score to 6-0.

Not to be outdone, Iowa State first baseman Shawn Leimbeck blasted a two-run shot in the second inning to bring the score to 8-0.

The Cyclones would again score on a solo shot in the fourth inning by McDonough .

Uelmen also began where he left off in the first game, by going two for four.

But Kansas State would come crawling back and eventually take the lead in the bottom of the seventh and hand ISU the loss.

For Iowa State, junior pitcher Scott Grawe took the loss.

Grawe pitched 2.2 innings and allowed one hit while striking out two batters and walking two.

The loss of the doubleheader leaves Iowa State with an 18-25 record overall and 3-17 record in the Big 12 conference.
