Molison set for grand finale this weekend

All good things must come to an end.

Saturday’s performance by the Des Moines Choral Society will be the last with Iowa State music professor Robert Molison as artistic director/conductor of the society.

Molison, Iowa State’s Director of Choral Activity, has been the artistic director and conductor of the society for six years. He said he decided to retire from the society in order to concentrate more on his job at Iowa State.

“Essentially I am quitting so I can spend more time on ISU,” he said.

Molison said the physical demands of having a full-time position at Iowa State and holding his position with the society were starting to get to be too much for him.

“There comes a time when one can’t continue expanding one’s activities,” Molison said.

Molison said he is in charge of choosing the music for the society and is responsible for preparing the concerts.

The Des Moines Choral Society is a community choir that consists of 100 auditioned adult singers from Des Moines and surrounding communities. The society has been performing for 17 years now.

The performance on Saturday is titled “Music From the Danube.” Molison said he picked music from two capital cities on the Danube River, Vienna and Budapest.

“There is quite a musical heritage from that part of the world,” he said.

Molison said the music in the concert will range from classical to church-related. The concert should offer something for all musical tastes.

Tickets for the concert are $12 and may be purchased through society members or the society’s office. Half-price student rush tickets may be available at the door 30 minutes before the performance.

The performance will be held Saturday at 8 p.m. in Harmon Performing Arts Hall, 25th and Carpenter, Drake University.
