Save Uranus
April 23, 1997
This week is Earth week. During Earth week, the world celebrates Earth Day.
We agree this is awonderful concept. People aren’t as conscious of the environmental damage occurring as they ought to be.
Species of animals and plants are disappearing under the claws of bulldozers and the blades of chainsaws. Fish are swimming in polluted water.
We need to try to be a little cleaner and show a little more respect to our celestial home.
It isn’t easy, there being so many of us and all.
Sometimes we can wonder whether the planet may eventually get fed up with us and give a shrug someday — thus expelling the human race from its back.
One thing is for sure, there aren’t enough Earth Day’s to suit everyone’s fancy.
To try and counter this dilemma, we suggest a new approach to the event:Have a day for each of the nine planets.
How about Neptune Day? Mars Day? Even Pluto Day?
Our point is, there are eight other planets in the solar system that may be undergoing an ecological crises and we are doing nothing to help them.
Venus has more ozone-ultraviolet problems than the people of Earth could ever comprehend.
How about a bumper sticker that says, “Save Uranus.”
Already we have a Sunday, and guess what? The sun is fine! It’s freckled with sun spots and holds everybody together.
It keeps us warm and helps us to see during the day.
Perhaps our entire problem is that our priorities are out of whack. We have a Sunday once a week and an Earth Day once a year.
It’s noble to fight to save the planet, but remember this, the planet is doing nothing to save us.
It just sustains us — and the ecological systems we are slowly destroying.
