Iowa State University’s Jason Knutzon continued to lead the Cyclone men’s golf team to a second place finish in the Arkansas State Invitational in Jonesboro, Ark. held on April 7-8.

The tournament, which featured 18 teams in a 36-hole format, was very competitive as seven teams were separated by just eight strokes.

“It was a great weekend for us,” Iowa State Head Coach Dale Anderson said.

Knutzon’s sixth-place finish was just a reminder of his fabulous junior season. The finish was his seventh top-10 finish in eight tournaments this year. After posting rounds of 69-76 (145).

“Jason had another fabulous tournament,” Anderson said. “Jason is currently ranked 37th among 2,000 or 3,000 golfers Division One. He deserves to be an All-American.”

Knutzon’s score was just one of the Cyclones’ four counting scores that helped to set a new school record for the lowest single-round team total in history. The record fell in the first round of the tournament as the team took a 12-stroke lead into the second round after posting a 283-stroke total.

“Our team set a record for that tournament. We shot five under par as a team,” Anderson said. “The Arkansas State coach told me it would stand for along time.”

Despite the 283-stroke first round, Iowa State followed it up with a round of 307, which allowed Arkansas State the opportunity to claim the team title despite tying the Cyclones after 36-holes.

Anderson was pleased with the total team effort.

“Our whole team is playing well,” Anderson said. “All of our group is doing really well. It is a balanced attack.”

Arkansas State won the medalist title in a sudden death playoff after posting two rounds of 295 strokes apiece to catch the Cyclones.

“It is kind of bittersweet,” Anderson said. “We managed to let them up. It is disappointing for the team.

“We lost at the last moment,” he said. “But nobody gave up. Our whole premise is not to have anything on the course. I am convinced our people gave their best effort.”

Following Knutzon’s score was senior Donnie Teeter.

Teeter completed the tournament in 147 shots, good enough for 11th place overall.

Jon Levy and Travis Korver also found their way into the top 20 with 149-stroke totals, good enough for a tie for 18th overall.

Rounding out the Cyclone contingency was sophomore Corey Chambers.

The sophomore finished the tournament in a tie for 74th with a final score of 161.

Claiming the individual medalist honor was Arkansas-Little Rock golfer Alex Maynard.

Maynard took 141 strokes to win the tournament.

Another teams of interest in the tournament was fellow Big 12 competitor Nebraska.

The Cornhuskers finished two strokes behind the Cyclones with a final tally of 592 strokes. Leading the Husker contingency was Josh Madden.

Madden finished in a tie for second place in the individual standings with a final card of 143 strokes.

Also participating from the Big 12 was Kansas State University. The Wildcats finished in 16th place with 632 strokes, 42 strokes behind the Cyclones.

Another school of interest is cross-state rival Drake University. The Bulldogs finished in a tie for fourth place with a team total of 595 strokes.

Ryan Hartman lead the Bulldogs in the individual standings with a final tally of 144 strokes.
