Reason or intelligence is not defying God
March 4, 1997
As a devout Baptist, I encounter many forms of what some may consider evil everyday. So when the news of cloning was announced, I decided to give it an unbiased chance of proving whether it was a blessing or a curse. I have still yet to make an educated opinion, but the one cliche that pops up often is: “Man should not play God.”
Everyone is entitled to believe in what religion they choose, but for those Christians saying, “Man is playing God,” by what reasoning is that achieved? Is finding a cure for one of “God’s diseases” defying God? Should those that wear seatbelts and survive car accidents think that they have mocked the “hands of fate?”
I think that as educated Christians we should support scientific endeavors to better understand our world, our universe and ourselves. Do not think of cloning as a wolf in sheep’s clothing, think of it as a blessing yet to reach its potential. Or just think of it as one of those challenges we humans give each other for the simple entertainment value of saying, “Hey, at least we accomplished it,” and then we never think about it again. Do not fret, a few years down the road cloning will be on the “Hey, at least we accomplished it” list just like Crystal Pepsi, the World Football League, and putting a man on the moon.
