Losing the TV stereotype
March 21, 1997
I give credit to USA Cable network for making the movie of Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis’ life (“Breaking The Silence: The Greg Louganis Story,” which aired Wed., March 19). The major networks wouldn’t touch the story with a 10-foot diving board, because of Louganis’ homosexuality.
However, the same old tired rules seem to apply when it comes to portraying a same-sex relationship. We don’t get to see Greg and his partner exchange a kiss, but
they didn’t hesitate to show the violent aspects of their relationship, including a same-sex rape scene.
It’s as if there’s an unwritten “You can kill him, but you can’t kiss him” policy when it comes to portraying gay relationships. When is TV finally going to grow up?
