Cowboy humor makes an interesting dinner

Comets aren’t the only things flying through the sky lately. Riders in the Sky is galloping into the Des Moines area, at the Ingersoll Dinner Theater through Sunday.

The musicians bring a different type of entertainment experience to Des Moines.

Producer Charles Carnes said, “The Riders are similar [in style] to Roy Rogers.”

If you don’t like country music, don’t be deterred from going to see Riders.

Carnes said the group doesn’t play the kind of music you would think it would.

“It’s not country music, but cowboy music,” he said. Carnes also said many songs are ones that “most anyone” would recognize.

Music is not the only part of the show. One of the main parts of the show is the group’s unique brand of humor.

“There is a lot of humor in their act,” Carnes said.

He said the laughs are one of the reasons for the group’s success.

The children’s shows are nothing new to the group, it has always been involved in entertaining children. For a while, the group had a Saturday morning TV show, and has made children a part of its show for years.

Carnes said the members “have always liked children.” And now that it’s spring break time for kids in the metro, the children’s matinees are possible.

The Riders in the Sky has been doing its thing for 20 years.

It recorded 20 albums, had its own national TV and radio shows, performed for presidents Reagan and Clinton and published a book.

Carnes said the group’s longevity is probably due to the fact that it sings songs a lot of people can recognize and because of its sense of humor.

The Riders in the Sky is performing at the Ingersoll Dinner Theater through 29.

It will perform evening shows, matinee performances and special children’s shows the afternoons of March 27 and 29.

Tickets for the show are $26 for adults and $24 for senior citizens.

Tickets for the children’s show are $8.95 for the March 27 and 29 matinees and $17.50 for all other shows.
