The Iowa State men’s baseball team improved its early season record to 4-2 by ousting Southwest Missouri State three times on Sunday, 10-9, 6-2 and 8-5.

The first game began on Saturday, but was suspended because of rain with the Cyclones trailing 5-3 in the fifth inning.

It was a different ballgame when play resumed. Iowa State mounted a late inning comeback when senior Clark Jones hit his third home run of the season to help push the Cyclones past the bears by a 10-9 tally.

Jones was two-for-five on the day while teammate senior outfielder Scott Vance went two-for-five with a double. Senior reliever Steve Larkin got the win, his first of the season, by pitching 1.1 innings.

The Cyclones then continued their success in the second game of the day. Senior Ryan Siefert got his second win on the mound, pitching 6.0 innings of the 6-2 victory. Siefert allowed two hits, two runs and struck out three. Vance led the Cyclone offensive by going two-for-three and scoring two runs.

Designated hitter Matt McDonough went one-for-three, doubling in two runs in the fifth and finishing the day with three runs batted in.

In the third game of the evening, it was junior college transfer Jason Mathys who got the win on the mound. Mathys threw 2.1 innings and allowed one Bear hit while striking out two batters.

Jones continued with his hot hitting, pounding a fifth-inning grand slam. The rightfielder tallied six RBIs in the 8-5 victory and eight in the series. Cyclone third baseman Bill Uelmen also cracked a solo shot in the win.

Iowa State will now travel to Minneapolis for a mid-week contest against Minnesota at the Metrodome. The game is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The Cyclones will then begin Big 12 play against Oklahoma at Norman this weekend.
