Room fire clears Knapp Hall
March 20, 1997
A room in Knapp Hall caught fire late Wednesday evening with room and property damage estimated at about $10,000 by the Ames Fire Department.
At approximately 6:50 p.m. fire alarms went off in 2231 Knapp Hall, which was occupied by Shawntay Murray, a freshman in biology from Des Moines.
The Ames Fire Department responded immediately, arriving on the scene at about 6:55 p.m.
After a preliminary investigation, fire department investigators determined that a “minor fire” was apparently caused by electrical extension cords. However, it is not known how the cords caused the fire.
There are many different ways the fire could have been caused, whether it be through a faulty cord or having too many things plugged into the cord at once, investigators said.
No injuries were reported.
Murray was apparently not present in the room at the time the fire started, Steve Sullivan, a spokesman for ISU, said.
Murray would not comment on the fire.
According to reports by the Ames Fire Department, someone noticed the fire and then pulled the local alarm, which sent the evacuation alarm throughout the entire building. When the location of the fire was discovered all the building’s occupants except for those living on the second floor were allowed to return to their rooms.
The entire second floor of Knapp Hall was left empty while the fire department investigated the cause of the blaze.
Members of the floor waited on the ground floor lobby while officials kept them informed.
