ISU swimmers finish fifth and sixth at Big 12

At the Inaugural Big 12 Conference Championships in College Station, Texas, the Iowa State men’s team finished fifth and the women’s team finished sixth.

The Texas men took first place with 920.5 points, and the Nebraska women won with 927 points.

ISU’s Mark Ritcey placed third with 2 minutes, 1.89 seconds in the 200 breaststroke, a NCAA consideration time, and Jay Schindler took fourth with 2:02.67.

Lovrenco Franicevic finished fourth in the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:48.08, a NCAA consideration time.

Johan Andersson had a fifth-place finish in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:49.40. John Ruzicka had a seventh-place finish in the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.88 seconds, which is also a NCAA consideration time.

For the ISU women, Kelly Yates took 11th in the 1,650 freestyle in a time of 18:01.77, while Brooke Larsen finished 12th with a time of 18:15.97. Julie Bancroft finished 16th in the 100 freestyle in 53.49. Trudy Henkels took 16th in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:12.26.

ISU tennis team sweeps Luther

The ISU tennis team dominated the match in Ames against Luther Saturday, winning 9-0. The Cyclones will match up against Oklahoma State at the Ames Racquetball and Fitness Club March 1.

Beyer, Hagedorn shine at NCAA qualifying meet

Iowa State junior Jamie Beyer set a school record in the weight throw with a toss of 65 feet, 8 1/4 inches on Saturday.

Josh Hegedorn won the shot put with a toss of 60-5 3/4.

All-American Randy Thompson ran a personal best time of 21.21 seconds in the 200-meter dash.

For the Cyclone women, Kris Curnyn finished second in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 59-4 1/4.

Curnyn has already qualified in the weight throw.
