Marching to the GROOVE
March 17, 1997
Snappy moves and groovy tunes are getting one Iowa State student organization requests to show off its talent to groups across the state.
“ISU GROOVE is student run and student owned,” said Creighton Gaynor, an enrollment services adviser who assists in instructing the club and also plays with the club occasionally.
Gaynor said ISU GROOVE (Grand Rhythmic Orchestra and Outstanding Visual Ensemble) has 20 members.
The instruments played by the club are: snare drums, tenor drums, cymbals, bass drums and auxiliary equipment like the bongos.
The schedule for ISU GROOVE is full, but it is always willing to try to accommodate other groups’ schedules, Gaynor said.
Some of the events at which ISU GROOVE members played this semester include the opening of Star Wars at River Hills Theater in Des Moines, a halftime show at Conrad and Ogden’s high school basketball game, a show for Relay for Life for the Cancer Society and a show for Walk for the Cure for Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. The group also performed at Iowa Percussive Arts Society for a major percussion clinician.
In the past, ISU GROOVE has played at Roc da Rec and Taste of Veishea during Veishea weekend, as well as the Veishea parade and Cy’s Big Top.
The group is also a popular halftime show at ISU basketball games and gymnastic meets, Gaynor said, as well as other ISU functions.
Gaynor said ISU GROOVE has four main goals: to develop and improve members’ talents at playing percussion instruments in the contemporary field percussion style; to strive to act as goodwill ambassadors to ISU students, staff, visitors and others; to perform a style of music in a way that entertains and educates the audience; and to have as much fun as possible.
ISU GROOVE is a regrouping of the ISU Drumline Club that disbanded in the spring of 1993.
Before the spring of 1994, the group went to the Government of the Student Body and received funding for a new set of drums and initial operating expenses, Gaynor said.
“ISU GROOVE is very thankful to the GSB and the ISU community for their support. We are also really happy to be working in a positive and productive relationship with the music department,” Gaynor said.
The drum line can be reached for performances through Gaynor or Scott Petersen, the instructor and also a sophomore in engineering.
Group auditions for those interested in joining ISU GROOVE are held on occasion, as are individual auditions.
Students of all ages and majors are encouraged to audition.
