Disgruntled ISU student is detained in dorm room
February 20, 1997
A disgruntled student, reportedly on his or her way to Beardshear Hall to confront members of the Iowa State administration, was detained on Wednesday afternoon in the residence halls by officials from the Student Counseling Center and the Department of Public Safety.
Most details about the incident were not made available.
Dan Robinson, interim vice president for student affairs, said the student was apparently headed toward Beardshear Hall to take issue with administrators, though it is not known exactly who the student wanted to speak with or why the student was upset.
Department of Public Safety Director Loras Jaeger said DPS received a call from the Dean of Students Office and the counseling center around noon on Wednesday.
“We were merely called in to assist Student Counseling with a student who was suffering from emotional problems,” Jaeger said.
Along with DPS, Gene Deisinger, counselor with the counseling center was also called in to deal with the situation. However, due to confidentiality laws, no one from student counseling would comment on the situation.
Jaeger said no criminal charges have been filed against the student at this time. Officials would not release the name or gender of the student.
Robinson said precautions were taken so workers could be in a position to support and aid the student.
“The person was a student who we were very concerned about, and we wanted to be sure we were in a position where we could provide help and support,” Robinson said.
The student’s alleged intentions were somewhat apparent, officials said.
“There was prior knowledge that the student would be coming to Beardshear to visit the president or another administrator in the building,” Robinson said.
“When such a situation occurs, we don’t really question what the student is going through. When someone is having emotional problems there can be many reasons why,” Jaeger added.
DPS and Student Counseling officials stopped the student before he or she reached Beardshear Hall.
