Harlem choir to perform this weekend

Founded in 1968 as a small church choir, The Boys Choir of Harlem has developed into a musical sensation.

Directed by Dr. Walter Turnball, The Boys Choir of Harlem has leapt out of the church and into the international spotlight as it continues to grow into a major performing arts institution.

The Choir’s 25th anniversary tour brings The Boys Choir of Harlem to Stephens Auditorium Friday night for one performance only.

The Choir performs many styles of music ranging from classical to jazz, contemporary, gospel and spirituals. Its first contemporary solo album, The Sound of Hope, was released in 1994 and has garnered many accolades.

Composed of 35 to 40 boys, the touring choir is selected from the 200-member concert choir on a rotating basis that schedules about 80 to 100 annual touring performances.

But for the members of The Boys Choir of Harlem, it is more than just an opportunity to sing. Over the years, The Boys Choir organization has provided programs that include comprehensive music and academic education, counseling and tutoring, which have led to a tradition of 98 percent college attendance.

Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show are $5, $7.50 and $10 for ISU students and are available at the Iowa State Center Box Office located at Stephens Auditorium or at all Ticketmaster outlets. Call 233-1888 to charge by phone.
