Cyclones tumble over Iowa

The Iowa State Gymnastics team defeated the University of Iowa last night in the final home competition of the season 194.675-191.800. The score was the second highest in school history. The victory improved the Cyclones’ record to 5-3 on the season.
The night was also marked by the final home performance for ISU seniors Kim, Karen, and Katie Mazza. Following the competition, there was a ceremony honoring the seniors and their tremendous achievements throughout their careers at Iowa State.
“They did a great job tonight, and it was tough due to the emotion involved. They will be dearly missed and are Cyclones through and through,” said ISU Gymnastics Head Coach Amy Pyle.
“They will carry the Cyclone spirit on with them throughout their lives.”
The Cyclones opened competition on the vault and once again continued their dominant string of performances by breaking the school record for the second straight week with an impressive score of 49.00.
Junior Heidi Kirt came through with her career best performance and in the process broke the school record with a near perfect vault of 9.95. Kirt also claimed first place honors with the record setting vault.
“Heidi did an awesome job tonight setting the record. She really rocked on her first one,” Pyle said.
Cyclone Freshman Kelly Cherwein also contributed an impressive performance with a new career best of 9.85 to claim second place.
Senior Kim Mazza performed a solid 9.80 to add to the Cyclone effort.
Moving to the uneven bars, Iowa State again put together another record setting performance as they scored a 48.70, topping last weeks record tying score of 48.62.
Taking top honors for the Cyclones on the bars was freshman Kelli More. She recorded the second best score in ISU history as well as a personal best score of 9.87 to claim first place.
“Kelli had an awesome meet, each time out she’s getting better and better,” Pyle said.
Mazza came through with a quality performance once again for the Cyclones as she recorded a 9.75 to take second place.
Juniors Libby Bell and Amy Wall each contributed a solid 9.725 for the Cyclone cause putting them in a tie for third place overall.
Moving on to the balance beam, the Cyclones recorded a score of 48.025. More continued her impressive performance by setting a new ISU record with a near perfect 9.9 on the beam. The performance also earned her first place honors for the meet.
Juniors Shannon Herzog and Kayo Merritt took third place honors as they recorded sound scores of 9.825 for the Cyclone effort.
Rounding out the competition with the floor exercise, the Cyclones continued to outperform the Hawkeyes en route to the victory. The Cyclones recorded a 48.925 with three gymnasts scoring over a 9.80 for the second highest score in school history.
Mazza, performing for the last time on the floor for the Cyclones, came through with her personal best performance and tied the second highest mark in ISU history with a 9.90 to take top honors in the meet.
More once again came through with a solid effort to take second place honors with a personal best score of 9.875.
Claiming third place for the Cyclones was Libby Bell with a score of 9.825.
The Cyclones compete next against the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln on Mar. 1. Competition begins at 2 p.m.
“Nebraska will be a tough meet. They’re ranked fifth in the country overall and fifth on the uneven bars. We’re going to need a good meet to be competitive,” Pyle said.
