ISU wrestlers down Missouri
February 10, 1997
Iowa State’s seventh-ranked wrestling squad put in a whole lot of mat time this weekend, and they started things on the right foot Friday against Missouri.
Cody Sanderson opened up the dual at 118 pounds with a 10-4 decision over Missouri’s Brooks Travis. At 126 pounds, fourth-ranked Dwight Hinson kept up the pace with a major decision over Brian Harris. The two wins gave ISU a jump in the team score, 7-0.
The Cyclones had a couple of squeaker losses, one in overtime, before Chris Bono, ranked No. 2 at 150 pounds, turned things around. His relentless pounding of Missouri’s Clint Caton nabbed him a 25-11 major decision, increasing his own tally of the season to 27-2.
The win also piled more points on Iowa State’s side of the board. The Cyclone lead, 11-6.
Cyclone John DeLeon continued the winning trend at 158 pounds, scoring a decision over Jared Sears.
No. 1 Barry Weldon drove the point home with even more intensity during his match at 177 pounds. He whipped Cory Hodapp to the point of match termination with a 21-5 score. From then on, it was all Iowa State. Matt Mulvihill at 190 pounds grabbed a decision against Kevin Stroh, 5-3, increasing the team score to 22-9.
And heavyweight Trent Hynek wiped away the sting of the overtime loss at 134 by snatching a 10-8 win in an extra period. After that decision, Iowa State officially triumphed, 25-9.
Iowa State improved to a dual record of 5-6-1, while Missouri fell to 7-4-2.
