Trice Stadium is a step

Although it took 22 years, the university’s president has finally made the right decision.

Jack Trice Stadium sounds nice, doesn’t it?

Back in the 1970s, President Robert Parks initially recommended Cyclone Stadium. Then in 1984, after a 9-year student movement, Parks recommended to name it Cyclone Stadium/Jack Trice Field.

Now President Martin Jischke has recommended naming the stadium in honor of Jack Trice.

The Iowa State Daily is happy about the decision, but it comes at a time when students, faculty and staff trust the administration the least.

After the shenanigans of the Office of Judicial Affairs, nobody believes the university knows what it is doing. By giving conduct probation to two members of The September 29th Movement, the university has decided it wishes to stifle speech. By closing the hearings of several Movement members who requested open hearings, the university angered more members of the university committee. Many feel the university violated the students’ rights by closing their hearings.

The students all plan to appeal the decisions of the OJA. They can appeal all the way to Jischke. If they don’t like Jischke’s decision, they can appeal to the state Board of Regents.

After 22 years, the administration finally reflects student interests concerning the stadium’s name, but at the same time the administration is ignoring other student concerns.

We know President Jischke is a firm believer in the system, and we hope when the appeals are in his hands, he does what is right and lets the Beardshear Eight go without sanctions.

After all Iowa State has endured this past year regarding minority affairs, Jack Trice Stadium is a plus, but ISU still has to right many other wrongs.
