Parks is again in trouble with the law

Daily Staff Writer

Belefia Demetrius Parks, a former Iowa State Basketball player and a senior in sociology, was arrested by a Department of Public Safety officer early Friday morning for giving false information to a law enforcement agency and not having a driver’s license.

Parks, 24, was pulled over at the intersection of Lincoln Way and Ash Avenue just after 3 a.m. on Friday for a seat belt violation. He told the officer that his name was Kurt M. Horton, said Jerry Stewart, assistant director of DPS.

Horton, a senior in engineering, turned out to be the passenger in the car and had an unserved suspension for his driver’s license. A suspension notice was given to him.

Parks was turned over to Ames police and was released on a $165 bail at about 4:30 a.m. Friday.

Parks also had a run-in with police in June of 1995 for stealing $1,000 worth of electronic equipment from Kmart on May 30, 1995. Parks had said he was taking the equipment out of the store while a friend of his was paying for it.

Parks, an Illinois native, was convicted of second-degree theft in the fall of 1995.

His conviction resulted in disciplinary actions from ISU, and he was removed from the basketball team.

Parks could not be reached for comment Monday.
