Democrat dinner focuses on governorship

Daily Staff Writer

How can Iowa democrats win back the Iowa governorship?

That question will be discussed at the annual Story County democratic soup-supper on Friday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. in the Collegiate United Methodist Church, 2622 Lincoln Way.

United States Congressman Leonard Boswell will moderate a panel discussion on the topic.

Jan Bauer, Story County democratic chair, said, “It will be primarily a discussion on what we’re going to have to do as democrats to win the governorship back.”

Panelists include Pam Jochum, democratic state representative from Dubuque; Mike Tramontina, director of the 1996 Clinton-Gore Iowa Caucus campaign; and Mike Peterson, Iowa Democratic Party chairman.

Bauer expects 150 to 200 people to attend the event. Soup, salad and dessert will be served and Tunes for Two will be supplying the entertainment.

A reception will be held prior to the supper for democratic club members at the home of Alan and Mary Atherly.

U.S. Senator Tom Harkin is expected to attend the reception, as well as Boswell.

Harkin will not attend the soup-supper because of another engagement in Des Moines.

Bauer said the recent news that Harkin may be running for governor in 1998 will be a “hot topic” at the reception.
