Good choice, ISU
February 13, 1997
Iowa State has recently chosen Valerie Grim as the first interim director of African-American studies.
Although the position of interim director is long overdue, ISU administrators chose wisely with Grim.
Because she graduated from ISU, her first integrated school, she understands the Iowa State campus from a student’s point of view.
With this background and her new position, Grim has the unique opportunity to bridge potential gaps between students and administrators.
The capability to moderate is important in what has recently become a volatile campus environment.
Like many organizations and institutions, Iowa State needs strong leaders.
We need leaders who aren’t afraid to bring their ideas to the public.
We need leaders who can bring their insights and strengths to the job.
While Grim is only an interim director, she still wants to incorporate curriculum development, create new courses and establish the director’s role in the relatively young African-American Studies Program.
There aren’t enough role models on campus, and there are even less African-American role models holding positions if such importance.
What Valerie Grim brings to her job is a fresh perspective with a solid background.
Good luck to you, Ms. Grim.
