Surge sends student to South Padre
February 19, 1997
For Kimberly Stevens, a junior in accounting and management, this year’s spring break will be anything but dull.
Stevens, a student from McHenry, Ill., will join 15 other lucky students from across the United States in an all-expenses paid trip to South Padre Island, Texas.
Stevens was the Iowa State winner of a promotional contest sponsored by Coke’s new soft drink, Surge.
She registered for the random drawing several weeks ago at Onion’s, a convenience store in the Memorial Union, when she was purchasing a snack between classes.
Last Friday, the box of more than 1,100 contestant entries was shuffled around, and one lucky winner was drawn for the vacation.
Chris Palar, manager of Onion’s and a representative for Coke products, drew Stevens’ name. It was his job to call Stevens and inform her she was the winner of a three-day vacation for two to South Padre.
Having just returned home from a long day at work, Stevens heard the phone ring and assumed it was one of her employers.
“She just didn’t sound very excited when I told her that she had won,” Palar said.
Stevens, however, said she was actually “jumping up and down and was very excited, but also very shocked.”
She said the lucky person who will accompany her on the all-expenses paid trip is her best friend.
The Surge soft drink drawing was held at only eight campuses across the country.
