‘Undercover’ with MTV
February 20, 1997
Imagine yourself at Panama City, Fla., over spring break, working on a suntan, drinking your beverage of choice and staring at fine specimens of the opposite sex.
Then imagine searching your mind for that perfect pick-up line. You run your fingers through your hair, adjust your sunglasses and say, “Hi, I’m here as part of the cast for an MTV show.”
MTV will be holding tryouts for its spring break lineup tomorrow at Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, 228 Gray Ave., from noon to 3 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. The network is looking for students to participate in two shows, “Undercover” and “Fame or Shame.”
Hoyt Christopher, producer of MTV’s spring break lineup, said “Undercover” is a show similar in style to “The Real World” and “Road Rules.” A camera will follow one set of men and one set of women around during spring break to detail everything they do.
“We will follow them to the bars, to the beach, to the bathroom and everywhere else in between,” Christopher said. “However, we want to make it perfectly clear that we are looking for all gender groupings, not a mixture.”
“We are looking for groups of three friends who know each other really well,” Christopher said. “These people should not be afraid of being followed around by a camera.”
“Fame or Shame” is a talent and crazy human trick show. “It’s like the ‘Gong Show’ for people with goofy talents,” MTV publicist Cosmo Masterpolo said. “It will be hosted by Dr. Dre and Ed Lover from ‘Yo! MTV Raps!’ with help from a surprise guest celebrity.”
Previous skits that have aired include a man who snorted a tadpole up his nose and blew it out alive, a woman who snorted spaghetti up her nose and spit it out, and four men who created a human milkshake by putting various ingredients into their mouths, then spitting it all into a cup and drinking it.
“We are looking for unusual and talented things,” Christopher said. “The stranger, the better. Bring something crazy that you would never usually do in public. [MTV] likes to put on things that are far from the social norm, things that are too weird to be shown anywhere else.”
Other shows that will be filmed over spring break include “Singled Out,” “The Grind,” “Body Doubles,” “Loveline” and “Idiot Savants.”
Christopher said MTV doesn’t hold tryouts for these shows, but anyone interested in appearing in them can fill out an application during the tryouts for the other two shows.
MTV is hitting Iowa State because spring break, March 8-18, is scheduled during the time the network plans to be filming in Panama City Beach.
“Our demographics show that a lot of Iowa State students go to this beach over spring break,” Masterpolo said. MTV has also held try-outs at other universities across the country.
But students shouldn’t attend the tryouts expecting a free spring break. “We are casting people who were already planning on going to Panama,” Masterpolo said. “We will not be giving out free airplane tickets, putting people up in hotels or giving them money for expenses. It’s completely voluntary.”
Tryouts are free for anybody who is planning on going to Panama City Beach for spring break. There is no registration process beforehand. Interested individuals just need to stop by.
Winners will be called by the end of next week for “Undercover” and by the first week in March for “Fame or Shame.” Those who are interested and can’t make it to the tryouts can also call MTV’s spring break hotline at (212) 258 – 7770 for further instructions and information.
