Grimm leads Cyclone women’s basketball team to 71-54 win over Missouri Tuesday

The Iowa State women’s basketball team finished its three-game road trip with a victory over the Missouri Tigers Tuesday night. The Cyclones (12-9, 5-6) defeated the Tigers 71-54 behind the career- scoring performance of junior forward Janel Grimm.
The Cyclones took advantage of a crowd of only 620 people, and controlled the game by having a statistical advantage in almost every category.
The win gives Iowa State its first ever regular-season sweep of the Tigers.
Grimm, the Cyclone’s second leading scorer, paced the Cyclones with 28 points, while grabbing a team-high 12 rebounds. The junior shot 11 of 17 from the field and stroked six of seven from the free-throw line.
Junior forward Jayme Olson was the only other Cyclone scorer in double figures. Olson hit four of seven shots from the field to add 14 points. All of Olson’s field goals came from behind the three-point arc.
The junior also added seven rebounds and three assists for the Cyclones.
Senior guards Julie Hand and Tara Gunderson each tallied six points in the game.
Hand hit both of her three-point attempts, while getting a couple of rebounds in the Cyclone victory.
Gunderson hit two of her seven attempts from behind the arc and dished out a team-high seven assists.
Freshman guard Amanda Bartz added five points for the Cyclones by hitting a three-point shot and hit both of her free-throw attempts. Bartz also added a blocked shot and a rebound for the Cyclones in nine minutes of action.
Iowa State held every categorical advantage in the game, except for turnovers and blocked shots.
Iowa State turned the ball over 13 times, while the Tigers only committed 11 turnovers.
The Cyclones and Tigers each managed to block three shots. Besides the block by Bartz, freshman forward Monica Huelman had a pair to lead the team.
ISU shot 40.7 percent (24 of 59) from the field and 45 percent from behind the three-point arc (nine of 20).
The Cyclones found their way to the charity stripe 17 times in the game, successfully hitting 14.
Iowa State also owned advantages in rebounds (46-40), assists (16-10) and steals (8-7).
Six players, including the five starters, scored all of the Tigers’ points.
The Tigers (9-15, 2-9) were lead in scoring by Julie Helm. Helm threw in 20 points and gained seven rebounds, an assist and a blocked shot in the Tiger loss.
The only other player in double figures for Missouri was Ekpedeme Akpaffiong with 10 points.
Among the other scorers for the Tigers was Kesha Bond with seven points, five of which came from the charity stripe.
Bond was the only returning starter for the Tigers from last season.
Susan Dixon also added seven points and grabbed three rebounds. She was the only player to score off the bench for the losing Tigers.
The remaining players to score for the Tigers were Amy Monsees and Stephanie White who each added five points.
The Cyclones held an eight-point halftime advantage at 31-23, and never looked back.
The victory was the Cyclones’ third conference road victory of the season, tying for the most in Cyclone history.
ISU Head Coach Bill Fennelly was unable to be reached for comment as he was on the recruiting trail.
With the three-game road trip ending, the Cyclones will now host a pair of games at home beginning with Kansas State on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.
