ISU swimming teams win big

The Iowa State men’s and women’s track teams put forth a stellar effort to win big on Friday at the Big Four Invitational in Cedar Falls at the UNI Dome.

The Cyclone’s men won seven of 16 events to score 74 points.

Iowa finished second with 45 points, UNI was third with 43 points and Drake was fourth with 35 points.

Among the first place winners for the men’s squad were Corey Ihmels in the mile with a clocking of 4.11:50, while nationally ranked senior Franklin Nwampka placed first in the 55-meters with a time of 6.17.

Iowa State’s weight men also dominated the competition with Josh Hagedorn winning the shot put with a toss of 58-2 while Cyclone Jamie Beyer won the weight throw with a heave of 61-10 1/2.

ISU junior Jerry Harris won the 200-meters with a time of 21.57 while placing behind Nwankpa in the 55-meters with a time of 6.19. Daman Lampley won the high jump with a leap of 6-9 3/4 while Cyclone Yago Lamela-Tobio won the triple jump with a leap of 50-1 1/4.

“We had a good, solid meet,” said ISU Head Track Coach Steve Lynn. “I thought out field event people did particularly well. Franklin was outstanding. His time was a school record. Obinna Eregbu was an All-American with a 6.19. So you can see how well he did tonight. This isn’t the most important meet on our schedule, but we’ve been the best track program in the state for years and our guys went out and performed like that tonight.”

The Cyclone women finished with 53 points, followed by Iowa with 42, Northern Iowa with 41 and Drake with 35 points.

Kris Curnyn led the way for the Cyclones, winning the weight throw with a toss of 62-6 1/2 while finishing second in the shot put with a toss of 47-8.

Sophomore Jane Groves won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.17.

Cyclone Erin Bresnan followed closely behind to finish second with a time of 2:15.56.

Also for the Cyclones, Ames native Sydney Pounds finished second in the mile run with a time of 5:05.0.

The Cyclones return to action February 7-8 when the host the Iowa State Classic at the Lied Recreation Center.
