GSB does well

Editorial Board

For all the complaining about the Government of the Student Body on the part of students and (GASP!) the student newspaper, senators and GSB executive officials really do get it right some of the time.

Wednesday night was one of those occasions. Wednesday night, the Senate approved two resolutions and one bill, all written to show support for sanctioned members of The September 29th Movement.

The votes were all nearly unanimous. And we were pleasantly surprised.

Wednesday night, the senators did exactly what they should have done.

They voted to support their own.

They didn’t take the standard, agreeing-with-the-administration line. They looked pretty objectively at The Movement’s situation and voted in the end to stand up for students — and for students’ right to choose their own representatives.

By objective, we mean this: You don’t have to agree with The Movement’s call to rename Catt Hall to realize there are more than a few things wrong with secret trials and too-stiff penalties.

You don’t have to agree with The Movement’s call to rename Catt Hall to realize that students whom were told they would likely receive no worse than a written reprimand for rallying shouldn’t now be told to systematically give up their leadership positions.

And you don’t have to agree with The Movement’s call to rename Catt Hall to realize that its members are genuine people who simply believe in a cause and are willing to sacrifice for it.

So thank you, senators, for following your roles as representatives of the students to a T — in this case, at least.

Wednesday night, our system of student government worked. We look forward to next Wednesday night.
