Three-year-champion Ames High School was defeated this weekend by Valley High of West Des Moines in the 1997 Ames Lab and Iowa State Institute for Physical Research and Technology Science Bowl.

Thirty-seven teams competed in the quiz-bowl style competition on Saturday, Feb. 22, held in the Ames Laboratory and ISU buildings.

The Valley High team beat Mount Pleasant High School by a score of 122-24 in the championship round. Ames High placed third in the competition.

The winning team: Paco Jain, Adrienne Clark, Chris Rotzien, Mikhail Seregine and Drew Volker was coached by Marge Clark.

Clark said in a press release the team was able to win the competition because they practiced every week to increase their knowledge of science.

“We would brainstorm on each of the subject areas,” Clark said in the release, “and we were fueled by Mountain Dew.”

The team from Valley High received a trophy and will travel to Washington, D.C. to compete in the DOE’s National Science Bowl in May.

The Mount Pleasant and Ames High teams also received trophies.
