Faculty forum tonight

Daily Staff Writer

The faculty forum and dinner series will resume today with a discussion dealing with uniting humanities and sciences in the classroom.

John Kozak, Iowa State provost and professor of chemistry, will begin the discussion. He plans to talk about the “two cultures” developed by Charles Snow in “The Two Cultures and Scientific Revolution.”

Three models for teaching science to non-science students will be used.

The first model includes teaching a course that is structured like a majors course, but with a restricted set of topics and objectives.

The next involves teaching a course on the history of science and the third is teaching on the philosophy of science, or encouraging students to see science as one of the “ways of knowing.”

Social time begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union. Dinner will follow at 6 p.m. and the discussion will begin at approximately 6:45 p.m.
