Weight throwers highlighted both the men’s and women’s squads as they competed at the UNI-Dome Open on February 14.
The men’s track team was led by sophomore thrower Jamie Beyer, who broke his own personal record in the shot put with a throw of 59 feet, 6.25 inches. His throw ranks him 13 in the nation in the event.
“He really set the tone with his first throw being a personal best, and then he threw even farther with 59-6.25 on his second throw,” said Steve Lynn, head coach of the men’s track team.
Jamie Beyer wasn’t the only successful shot put thrower, though, as Josh Hagerdon and Tim Wilson took second and third places, respectively. Hagerdon had a throw of 58 feet, 9.5 inches, and Wilson was marked at 57 feet, .25 inches.
“The highlight of the meet was the shot put. They all had outstanding performances,” Lee said.
All three of ISU’s throwers are now listed in the top 25 in the nation in the shot put.
ISU All-American Randy Thompson placed third in the 200- meter dash with a time of 21.91 seconds. Thompson also placed fourth in the 55-meter dash in 6.40 seconds.
“His knee has bothered him some. He didn’t really have the meet that he wanted to,” Lee said.
Other top performances for the Cyclones came from freshman Matt Williams who placed second in the 1,000-meter run, with a time of 2:31.04.
Brian Smith had a time of 1:20.04 in the 600-meter run, placing him third, while Chris Wycoff earned a fourth in the 55-meter high hurdles with a time of 7.78 seconds.
The men’s team is now looking forward to competing hard at the Big 12 Indoor Championship.
“We’ve got six All-Americans on our team, and two others that have won Big 8 Championships. We have a really solid team,” Lee said.
The women’s team was also paced by the weight throwers, led by Kris Curnyn and Karelle Seuferer.
Curnyn won both the shot put and the weight throw. She had a toss of 47 feet, 10 inches in the shot put, and a mark of 43 feet, 3.75 inches in the weight throw.
Seuferer was not far behind, as she threw for 43 feet, 3.75 inches for second place in the shot put, and 46 feet, 1.25 inches in the weight throw for a third place finish.
Other first place performances came from freshman Leah Elbert, who won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 3.25 inches. Sara Riemersma also won, taking the 600-meter dash in 1:35.45 seconds.
Jada Johnson placed second in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.34 seconds.
ISU again had two of the top places in the 55-meter hurdles. Laurie Hammel earned a second place finish in the event with 8.37 seconds, and Katarina Svensson right on her heals with a time of 8.44 seconds and a third place finish.
The men’s and women’s teams will compete at the Big 12 Indoor Championship on February 21 and 22.
