ISU gymnasts dominate Oklahoma
February 25, 1997
The Iowa State gymnastics team put together its top performance of the year Friday night as they defeated the Oklahoma Sooners in Hilton Coliseum 195.600-190.750.
The Cyclones performed exceptionally and improved their season record to 4-3 en route to setting new school records for team points, vault, balance beam and tying the record for the uneven bars as well as recording the second highest mark in the floor exercise.
“It’s nice to have two good meets in a row, it’s a motivator and booster in confidence for the rest of the season. We needed another good score to qualify for the NCAAs. It was a goal to score a 194.50 and we ended up smashing the record,” said Amy Pyle, head gymnastics coach
Several exceptional individual performances also highlighted the meet.
The most notable performance was from senior Kim Mazza, again breaking her own school record in the all-around (39.20) and junior Amy Wall establishing a new Iowa State record on the vault (9.90).
Mazza broke her own record a week after setting a new mark against Missouri. The senior recorded two first-place finishes along with a second to secure first place in the all-around and the record.
Mazza scored a 9.850 on the balance beam and the floor exercise and a 9.750 on the uneven bars and the vault.
“Kim once again had an awesome meet, she’s a true competitor. She hit like she’s capable of and the scores show it,” Pyle said.
The Cyclones again opened the meet on the vault and never looked back. Scoring a 48.975 they continued their dominance on the vault as they have all season. Wall remained a constant as the Cyclones’ top vaulter this season. She won her fourth consecutive meet on the vault and in the process recorded a personal best and new school record of 9.90.
“Amy’s competing a new vault this year and getting the school record is an incredible feat. She’s done a remarkable job,” Pyle said.
Freshman Kelly Cherwein came through with a solid performance as well, recording a personal best of 9.825 to claim second-place honors.
Iowa State swept all three places as junior Heidi Kirt also performed well and took third place, scoring a 9.80.
Moving to the uneven bars, the Cyclones continued their assault on the Iowa State record book.
In recording a 48.625, tying the school record, the Cyclones again took the top three honors.
Sophomore Michelle Hladkly placed first with a score of 9.775 to lead the Cyclone effort on the bars.
Mazza and freshman Kelli More tied for second place, each recording a solid 9.750 for the Cyclones.
“Hitting the vault and bars set us up. It’s easier competing on the beam and floor knowing you’ve hit on the two previous events,” said Pyle.
Continuing with the theme of the night, the Cyclones also set a new school record on the balance beam as well, recording a 48.950.
Junior Shannon Herzog had a solid performance on the beam as she tied with Mazza for top honors, with both scoring a 9.850.
Rounding out the top three was ISU’s More, who took third place with a score of 9.80.
Moving to the floor exercise, the Cyclones’ again put their mark on the record book, tying the second highest mark in Iowa State history with a 49.050.
Once again the Cyclones swept the top three places while recording four scores above a 9.80.
Mazza capped off her record- breaking meet by claiming top honors on the floor with a 9.850.
Junior Libby Bell and Kirt each recorded a 9.825 to share second place honors, while More contributed a 9.80 for the Cyclone cause.
“It will be much easier now to step into practice and meets and know you can do it. Our goal is to come as close to this score as possible.” said Pyle
The Cyclones next competition is the final home meet of the season and senior night on Thursday, Feb. 27 against Iowa at Hilton Coliseum. Competition begins at 7 p.m.
“Iowa doesn’t have as strong a team as they’ve had in the past, if we hit we should win. We want to go 24 for 24 with no falls, if we do that we have the capability to perform even better,” said Pyle
