Students can learn in London through ISU
February 14, 1997
In one of the first programs of its kind in the nation, the Study Abroad Center and Career Services are offering a chance for students to study in London while earning ISU credit and work experience through paid internships.
The program begins May 6 in London, and classes last until May 30. In those two weeks, students will learn about the British work world, how to tailor their resum‚s to British audiences, how to interview, and other career development skills, according to a press release.
The class will also take cultural trips in and around London. The course will be team-taught by Iowa State and University of Westminster professors. This training will help students to obtain jobs for the second part of the trip.
For the rest of the trip, students will try to secure employment in an area close to their major. To make this process easier, students will be paired with one of over 100 ISU graduates living near London.
However, students can choose to seek employment in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. With work permits, students can work up to six months.
Tuition, work permit, housing for three weeks, partial board, and cultural trips will cost around $1,300; scholarship applications are available from the Study Abroad Center.
Angela Eilering, a senior in sociology who works in the Study Abroad Center, is participating in the program.
“I love Britain and am excited about the chance to work there, especially with the program’s support. It gives you a cushion.” she said.
Applications for the trip are available from the Study Abroad Center, 5 Hamilton Hall, Career Services Office, 204 Engineering Annex, or from Steve Kravinsky, program head, at 294-2542. The program deadline is Monday and scholarship deadline is March 15.
