Money for a secular cause
February 25, 1997
What is this I hear? GSB is giving money away to the religions of their choice? I realize that many would support this decision, but some of us secularists feel this money could be better used. Todd Swanson, GSB Director of Finance, says that funds cannot be allocated to any group that “promotes a specific religion.” I’m willing to bet that Faith and Life Fellowship is a Christian-based group. As far as I’m concerned, Christianity is a “specific religion.”
And don’t tell me that Lutheran, Mormon, Methodist and Presbyterian are different religions. If I am wrong and Faith and Life represents Islam, Hinduism and Voodoo, then please forgive my misunderstanding. I still prefer the money be used elsewhere. As for Timothy Meyer’s comment that everyone has a certain religious affiliation: Travel around the world a little more — they didn’t invent the word ‘secular’ to be cute.
Most religions are so monstrous in size, I’m surprised they cannot support themselves. I DO understand that this money is to be used for renovation of a camp and preschool, a most noble cause. Faith and Life, however, has said that the camp and such would NOT be nonreligious. Thus, the money is still being used to promote religion.
There are other ways of supporting the inner city youths of Denver that don’t involve religion. And if the GSB would like to refund me my share of the $2,340 allocated, I will gladly send it to the city of Denver to help its children. But I don’t want Christians taking a slice out of my donation first. The GSB usually doesn’t make decisions that are popular with the student body. I suspect that lack of student input is a big contributor.
Well here’s my input: To the GSB. I don’t give you permission to give any more money to promote religion. The religions are old enough to support themselves now. I do give you permission to give money to the children, education and the general posterity.
If I have offended any religions with my secularist attitude, please forgive me. If anyone plans on writing me back to tell me that I need God in my life — don’t bother, I don’t believe in him/her/it. If anyone plans on responding by telling me to go to Hell — don’t bother, I don’t believe in Hell either. Thank you!
